Do you need a driving license to ride a speed pedelec?

The speed pedelec regulations in Belgium are clear: you need a driving license to ride a speed pedelec. Speed pedelecs can easily reach speeds of up to 45 km per hour, so the government has decided that they fall under moped regulations.

Which driving license allows me to ride a speed pedelec?

You need at least an AM driving license (moped) to ride a speed pedelec on public roads. Does this mean you still have to obtain this license if you do not currently have one? No, not at all. If you have a driving license for another vehicle (except for the G license for agricultural vehicles), that is also sufficient. With a standard car driving license, you are therefore allowed to ride a speed pedelec.

Which other rules must I take into account?

In addition to having a valid driving license, there are several other speed pedelec regulations you must observe. These are the most important:

• Your bicycle must be equipped with a speed pedelec license plate. You receive the license plate once your speed bike has been registered. You can find out here how to register a speed pedelec.
• You are required to wear a speed pedelec helmet.
• Speed pedelec insurance is not mandatory, but we do recommend it.
• You are not allowed to ride everywhere with a speed pedelec; you must follow the traffic rules for mopeds.
• You must keep your Certificate of Conformity safe. This may be useful if you ever decide to sell the speed bike.
• A speed pedelec must be equipped with the necessary lighting, a rear-view mirror, and a horn.
