Which speed pedelec helmet should you buy? Discover it in this ultimate buying guide!

A good and above all safe bicycle helmet is essential when you head out on a speed pedelec. But which speed pedelec helmet should you buy? What are the differences between the various models? This guide walks you through the decision-making process and helps you find the right speed pedelec helmet. We start at the beginning and briefly explain what a speed pedelec actually is.

    What is a speed pedelec?

A speed pedelec is an electric bicycle that can reach speeds of up to 45 km per hour with assistance. A standard e-bike only reaches speeds of up to 25 km per hour.

Over the past decade, demand for speed pedelecs has increased because they are a valuable and sustainable alternative to the car and are highly suitable for daily commuting. Moreover, you can often recover part of the purchase cost of a speed pedelec through the bicycle allowance you receive from your employer. A speed pedelec is therefore good for the environment as well as for your wallet.

What does Belgian legislation say about helmets?

The s peed pedelec rules in Belgium are clear: if you ride a speed pedelec on public roads, you are required to wear an approved bicycle helmet. This speed pedelec helmet must at least carry a CE label (in accordance with EN1078) and must protect the back of the head and the temples. Even if you are wearing a bicycle helmet, you can still sustain serious injuries if you are involved in an accident.

If you do not wear a speed pedelec helmet while cycling, you may receive a fine of €100.

How do you recognize a speed pedelec helmet?

A speed pedelec helmet is sturdier than regular bicycle helmets. There is a simple reason for this: with a speed pedelec, you travel much faster in traffic (45 km/h).

As mentioned earlier in this article, a speed pedelec helmet offers more protection and support to the back of the head and the temples. As a result, its shape is slightly different compared to classic bicycle helmets.

Welke speed pedelec helm moet je kiezen? Je moet rekening houden met verschillende aspecten. Vooral veiligheid vinden wij heel belangrijk.

Often a speed pedelec helmet is also equipped with a visor that you can move up and down. This gives you optimal visibility at all times when cycling at high speeds. In addition, there are also many models with an integrated rear light.

What should you look for when buying a speed pedelec helmet?

You do not buy a speed pedelec helmet every day. That is why it is important to choose the right helmet from the start. Feeling overwhelmed by the options? Then consider the following aspects: comfort, size, and safety.

    Safety

In our view, safety is the most important aspect to consider when purchasing a speed pedelec helmet. Always choose a bicycle helmet that carries a CE label (bicycle helmet in accordance with EN1078 + protection for the temples and the back of the head, or a moped helmet). Also consult the guidelines on the website of the Flemish Government.

Also think about the price range of your helmet. Yes, there are many inexpensive helmets available. However, safety is not something you should compromise on.

    Size and comfort

In addition to safety, we at Cyclobility place great importance on wearing comfort. Choosing the correct size for your bicycle helmet is therefore very important. To determine your helmet size, you need to know your head circumference in centimeters. You can easily measure this yourself using a measuring tape. Wrap the measuring tape around your head and read the number of centimeters. It is important to keep the tape in a straight line just above your ears while measuring.

A speed pedelec helmet generally has a thicker foam layer for better protection. This naturally means it can become warmer under your helmet compared to a regular bicycle helmet. Therefore, you should also consider ventilation. Are there enough ventilation openings in the helmet to provide cooling while cycling?

To increase comfort, you can choose a helmet with a visor. A visor ensures that you are not bothered by watery eyes, wind, rain, or insects while cycling.

Planning to go all the way? Then you can also opt for a helmet with a rain cover and ear warmers. Ideal for commuters who cover many kilometers during the autumn and winter months. The ABUS Pedelec 2.0 ACE is a good example of this.

What is the best speed pedelec helmet?

There are many good speed pedelec helmets from various brands. At Cyclobility, we consistently choose Abus and Kask helmets. These brands are synonymous with superior quality and safety. They are both made from high-quality materials and are extensively tested.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a regular bicycle helmet and a speed pedelec helmet?

A speed pedelec helmet offers much more protection compared to a regular helmet. It provides additional support to the back of the head and the temples. Speed pedelec helmets are also often equipped with goggles or a visor so that you experience less inconvenience from wind and insects during your rides.

Do I need to take out insurance if I ride a speed pedelec?

There is no mandatory speed pedelec insurance (unless your pedelec can move autonomously without pedal assistance, in which case third-party motor vehicle liability insurance is required). From Cyclobility, we do strongly recommend taking out bicycle insurance against damage and theft. In addition, personal liability insurance that covers damage to third parties is certainly advisable.

Do you have to register a speed pedelec?

Yes, a speed pedelec must be registered with the DIV, just like mopeds. Speed pedelecs therefore carry a small license plate of approximately 10 by 12 cm. Discover here how to register a speed pedelec .

How much does a speed pedelec helmet cost?

The cost of a good speed pedelec helmet can vary between 150 and 300 euros. The price of the helmet depends on various factors, such as the brand and the available options. Helmets from well-known brands are generally somewhat more expensive than those from lesser-known brands. In addition, extra features, such as ear warmers for cold weather or an integrated rear light for better visibility on the road, can influence the price of the helmet.

However, it is important to emphasize that a high-quality helmet is essential for safety when riding a speed pedelec. When choosing a helmet, you should not only consider the price, but also the fit, comfort, and safety certifications. A properly fitting helmet that meets safety standards can make all the difference in the event of a fall or collision.

Yes, the speed pedelec regulations are clear: wearing a bicycle helmet with a CE label (in accordance with EN1078) is mandatory in Belgium. If you do not wear a speed pedelec helmet, you may receive a fine of 100 euros.
