Why buy a bicycle lock?

A reliable bicycle lock is essential to prevent theft.

With a good lock you can:

  • Make it difficult for thieves
  • Protect your investment
  • Meet your bike insurance requirements
  • Have greater peace of mind every day, whether you park at home, at the station or at work

A good lock isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.

Invest in a lock that is thick enough, grind-resistant, ART-approved and user-friendly.

How do I choose the right brand or model?

The place where you leave your bicycle plays a significant role. In a busy city or at a railway station, it’s best to go for a sturdier lock. If your bike is usually at home or in a quieter spot, a lighter lock will often do the job.

Pay special attention to:

  • 1

    ART rating for insurance

The ART rating indicates how theft-resistant a lock is and is required by many insurers (often with at least 2 or 3 stars) to guarantee cover in the event of theft.

  • 2

    Chain thickness, length and material

The thickness of a chain says a lot about security. Thicker links usually achieve a better ART rating and are harder to cut, but they also weigh significantly more. Length also plays a role: a longer chain makes it easier to secure your bike to something fixed, but is less convenient to carry. So it remains a trade-off between comfort and security.

  • 3

    Weight vs safety

The sturdier the lock, the heavier it usually is. If you cycle a lot and want a lock that you can easily take with you, you are more likely to choose a lighter model. If you often leave your bike in town or for long periods, a heavier and stronger lock is the safest choice.

  • 4

Type of lock: ring, chain, folding lock, U-lock

Each type of lock has its own advantages. A ring lock is quick and practical for short stops. A chain lock or folding lock gives you more flexibility to secure your bike to a fixed object. A U-lock is known as one of the most robust options. So, depending on your bike and how you use it, you can choose the type that suits you best.

How does a bicycle lock work?

Depends on the type:

  • Ring lock: locks around the rear wheel
  • Chain: must be passed through frame + fixed object
  • Folding lock: sturdy metal hinges that fold up compactly

    • Ring lock: standard size for most bikes.
    • Chain lock: 90-120 cm for everyday use, 140-170 cm for extra flexibility.
    • Folding lock: compact design, with a length similar to a chain lock.

  • At Cyclobility, in all our shops.

  • The price of a bicycle lock typically ranges between €20 and €150, depending on the type, quality and level of security.

  • Based on ART testing, the ABUS Bordo Granit XPlus and ABUS Ivy Chain score among the best in terms of security.

  • Always choose at least ART 2 or ART 3. Preferably a chain + ring lock or a sturdy folding lock.

  • Usually a lock with ART 2 or ART 3 approval. You can often find this specified in your insurer’s terms and conditions.

  • A good lock is thick enough, resistant to grinding, ART-approved and easy to use.

  • A combination of a ring lock and an additional chain is the most popular and one of the most secure options.

  • No lock is 100% resistant to cutting, but ABUS Granit models are highly resistant and very difficult to cut.

  • In practice, it’s best to choose a sturdy U-lock or folding lock in hardened steel with an ART 2 or ART 3 rating. Also look for extra security features, such as resistance to ice spray. Bear in mind that thicker and heavier locks usually offer better protection, but are less convenient to carry.

  • A chain lock is much more secure. Cable locks are lightweight but relatively easy to cut.

  • An ART 3 lock offers a higher level of security and is especially recommended for more expensive bikes or e-bikes that are often left in the city. ART 2 is lighter and more practical for everyday use, and strikes a good balance between security and convenience for many bikes.

  • Popular top choices include:

    • ABUS Granit XPlus (ART 3 & 4)
    • ABUS Ivy (ART 2 & 3)
