Why buy a bike light?

Bicycle lighting is mandatory in Belgium after dark, but above all it is an essential safety accessory.

With high-quality bike lights, you:

  • Are more visible to other road users
  • Improve your own visibility, especially on unlit cycle paths
  • Help prevent accidents, as front and rear lights clearly indicate your position
  • Ride more comfortably, thanks to the bright beams that illuminate the road ahead

Whether you have a city bike, electric bike or sports bike, reliable bicycle lights are indispensable.

Which bike lights should you choose: Lumen vs lux - what’s the difference

For city use: 100-200 lumens and 10-15 lux are usually sufficient.

For dark or unlit roads: 400-1000+ lumens and at least 30-50 lux are recommended. This ensures excellent visibility, even at higher speeds or changing road conditions.

  • 1

    Lumen

Lumens indicates the total amount of light a lamp produces. In general, the higher the lumen value, the more powerful the light output.

  • 2

    Lux

Lux measures how much of that light actually reaches a specific point on the road. This gives a better indication of how effectively your path is illuminated and depends on the beam pattern, lens design and correct adjustment of the light.

What should you look for when buying bike lights?

When choosing bicycle lights, pay attention to these key factors:

  • Lumen & lux: determine how much light the lamp produces and how much of it is effectively projected onto the road
  • Battery life: choose a light that lasts long enough for your typical rides
  • Water resistance: at least splash-proof (IPX4) for reliable use in wet conditions
  • Mounting system: ensure the light fits securely on your handlebar, seat post or helmet

Legal requirements: white light at the front, red light at the rear, visible from up to 100 metres and securely attached; flashing mode is permitted as long as it does not dazzle other road users.

  • Good bicycle lighting is powerful, waterproof, well focused, has a long battery life and is securely attached. LED lights from brands such as Lezyne perform exceptionally well in all these areas.

  • Mandatory requirements:

    • White or yellow light at the front
    • Red light at the rear
    • Lights must be clearly visible and must not dazzle other road users
    • The rear light may flash; the front light usually must not (rules may vary by country)
  • Because they ensure visibility, safety and legal compliance . Without proper lighting, you are difficult to see in traffic and risk receiving a fine.

  • This depends on how and where you ride, but Lezyne models such as the Lite Drive or Macro Drive are popular top choices thanks to their powerful light output, robust build quality and long battery life.

  • Road cyclists are best advised to choose lightweight, powerful LED lights with a long battery life and a focused beam, such as the Lezyne Micro Drive or Lite Drive. Also pay attention to mounting options, as some bikes require a specific bracket or attachment system.

  • Yes. 500 lumens is more than sufficient for urban use and ideal for rides on poorly lit or semi-dark roads.

  • 20–30 lux is suitable for everyday use, 50+ lux is preferred by sporty or faster riders.

    • Front light: white or yellow
    • Rear light: red
    • Both lights must be clearly visible
  • In Belgium, the fine for riding without proper bicycle lighting is usually €58 (local GAS fines may vary).

  • Minimum 50 lumens to be seen by others, 200-400 lumens to clearly see the road yourself. 600+ lumens for sporty or high-speed rides

  • Lights with a fixed mounting, socket attachment or integrated lighting (for example in a luggage carrier) are generally less prone to theft.

  • Flashing lights can blind or confuse other road users, especially when used at the front. For this reason, permanently mounted lights must shine continuously, both front and rear.

Detachable lights are allowed to flash. For best visibility without causing disturbance, use a flashing mode as a supplement, ideally combined with a steady light.

  • Wheel lights are not mandatory, but are allowed as long as they do not dazzle other road users and do not create moving red or white patterns that could cause confusion.
