Why buy a bicycle helmet?

A bicycle helmet significantly reduces the risk of head injury in the event of a fall or collision.

In Belgium, wearing a helmet is mandatory when riding a speed pedelec. For speed pedelecs, the helmet must meet legal requirements. At least an EN 1078-approved bicycle helmet with extended protection for the temples and the back of the head, or a dedicated speed pedelec helmet, designed to offer extra protection at higher speeds.

Beyond legal requirements, it is just as important to protect passengers, such as children riding in a cargo bike or on a longtail bike. In busy urban traffic, they are particularly vulnerable. A good bicycle helmet significantly reduces the risk of serious head injury in the event of a fall or collision.

And there are even more reasons why a good helmet makes all the difference:

  • Increased safety at higher speeds, especially on e-bikes
  • Better visibility thanks to reflective details or integrated lighting
  • Greater comfort through lightweight materials and effective ventilation

You don’t wear a helmet because you expect something to happen – you wear one so you’re prepared if it does.

What should you look for when choosing a bicycle helmet?

When choosing a bicycle helmet, there are some important points to consider. You can read more in our blog.

  • 1

    Fit & adjustment system

A helmet should feel secure and comfortable, without pinching. A good adjustment system allows you to fine-tune the fit so the helmet stays stable while riding.

  • 2

    CE verification

Always choose a helmet with a CE mark. This confirms it meets European safety standards and has been tested for shock absorption and protection.

  • 3

    Additional safety technology

Helmets equipped with MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) offer extra protection in angled impacts by reducing rotational forces on the brain.

  • 4

    Ventilation

Well-designed ventilation channels help dissipate heat and sweat, increasing comfort on long rides or in warm weather.

  • 5

    Visibility

Helmets with reflective elements or integrated lighting improve visibility, especially at dusk or in low-light conditions.

  • 6

    Type of cycling

Choose a helmet that suits your riding style: Urban cycling & commuting: comfort and visibility Road cycling: low weight and ventilation E-bikes: extra protection, stability and visibility.
