Where can you ride a speed pedelec? These are the rules in Belgium

The speed pedelec is quickly gaining popularity as a fast and eco-friendly mode of transport, especially through bike leasing. But can you ride it anywhere? In Belgium, specific regulations apply to speed pedelecs, and these rules are largely the same across Flanders, Brussels, and Wallonia. To stay safe and avoid fines, it's essential to know them well.

    Pay attention to traffic signs

Speed pedelec regulations are partly defined by traffic signs and sub-signs. Some roads or paths may have mandatory access for speed pedelecs, while others may prohibit them entirely. Always pay close attention to traffic signs to know where you can and cannot ride. The sign that indicates speed pedelec access is a moped symbol with the letter 'P'.

Don't forget to register your speed pedelec !

To help you stay compliant and safe on the road, here are the most important rules:

Roads with a speed limit of 50 km/h or lower

On roads where the speed limit is 50 km/h or less, you have a choice: You may ride on the cycle path or on the carriageway. Keep in mind that the maximum speed of a speed pedelec is 45 km/h. Always stay alert to other road users and adjust your speed to the traffic situation.

Roads with a speed limit above 50 km/h

On roads where the speed limit exceeds 50 km/h, you are required to use the cycle path. This rule is crucial for safety, as traffic tends to be faster and heavier on these roads.

    Cycling zones

Special rules apply in bicycle zones: in a one-way street, you are allowed to ride your speed pedelec across the entire width of the carriageway. On streets with two-way traffic, you must use the full right lane. Speed restriction: the speed limit in a cycling zone is 30 km/h to ensure a safe environment for all cyclists and two-wheelers.

Did you know? You can limit your speed pedelec to 30 km/h if needed! Feel free to visit our shop our bike shops and our technicians will be happy to show you how.

    Residential areas and play streets

Residential areas and play streets are areas where pedestrians and playing children have priority. Specific speed limits apply, which you must always respect. Since regulations may vary by municipality, it's important to check local rules to avoid fines.

    Pedestrian zones

In most pedestrian zones, riding a bicycle or speed pedelec is prohibited. Exceptions exist, but they are always clearly indicated by signs. If there is no explicit permission, you must dismount and walk with your bike.

    Did you know ...

There is a special traffic sign that allows cyclists and speed pedelec riders to turn right at a red light! This helps ensure a smooth traffic flow and reduces unnecessary stops.

Anyway, with these rules in mind, you’re ready to ride safely and responsibly on your speed pedelec. Enjoy the ride!
