Take care of yourself and your bike during autumn

We’ve had a wonderful summer and late summer, but it will soon get a lot colder! Those who don’t want to put their bike away during the winter months should take these tips into account. A well-maintained bike will save you a lot of trouble.

    1. Keep maintaining your electric bike

    • Because road saltcan damage your bike, it’s best to clean it as soon as you get home: rinse the frame and then wipe it clean with a cloth.
    • Make sure to lubricate your chain with the proper chain oil.
    • Your brake pads take more wear in winter than in the summer months, so be sure to check them regularly.
    • Try to always store your electric bike indoors during cold temperatures. This way, it is protected from rain and/or frost.

    2. Protect your battery

    • Always use the charger that was supplied with the battery. The wrong charger can cause serious damage!
    • Do not leave your battery in a cold place. Can’t you remove the battery? Then try to store your bike indoors.
    • Respect the charging cycle and avoid letting the battery run empty. The less deeply your battery is discharged, the longer it will last!

    3. Eliminate the risk of slipping

    • Always use both brakes!
    • Lower tyre pressure increases your grip on the road.
    • Choose the right gear: applying too much force in a gear that is too high increases the risk of slipping.
    • Moderate your speed, as sudden braking is not recommended on slippery roads.
    • And be extra careful in the forest! When it’s very cold, frozen forest paths can be dangerous.

Helpful tip: you may use the roadway when the bike path is not rideable! To increase your visibility on the road, it’s best to wear a high-visibility vest.

    4. Dress appropriately

The ideal outfit for cycling? It should be both waterproof and windproof, as well as breathable. No one wants to arrive completely soaked, frozen and sweaty.

    • Excessive sweating is not pleasant, so avoid cotton underwear or clothing. It’s better to choose thermal wear, which keeps you warm.
    • To lose less heat (and energy) through your head, you can wear a beanie under your bike helmet.
    • Gloves! Gloves! Gloves! Make sure you have a waterproof pair that still allows you to shift and brake easily.
    • Dress in layers: if you get too warm, you can remove a layer.

Those who lease via Cyclobility can also lease cycling clothing. Contact us , we’ll be happy to help!

    Don’t abandon your bike

Although “keep cycling!” is the best advice we can give, weather conditions don’t always allow you to take your bike out. In that case, it’s better to carpool or go to work on foot.

However, don’t just store your electric bike away: prolonged low temperatures have a major impact on the battery. If it goes into an icy “sleep mode,” there’s no guarantee it will wake up again. So make sure your battery is always charged to 3/5 and take it out for a short ride from time to time! This is important for the lifespan of your battery.

And remember… “Be careful on the road!”
