More off-road fun with an electric mountain bike
The electric mountain bike (e-MTB in short) is taking over the trails at lightning speed. Whether you're looking to explore technical terrain, push your climbing limits, or just want to keep up with your cycling buddies more comfortably, an e-MTB makes it all possible.
But what exactly is an e-MTB? And how do you choose the right one for your needs? Cyclobility is here to guide you every step of the way.
What is an e-MTB?
An e-MTB is a mountain bike equipped with electric pedal assist. That means you still do the pedaling, but the motor kicks in when you need an extra boost, especially handy on steep climbs, rough ground, or long rides. It still feels sporty and dynamic, but it makes those challenging sections way more accessible.
Don’t get this wrong, though: it’s not a motorbike. You need to keep pedaling for the assist to work. If you stop, so does the power.
Top-quality e-MTB brands include Riese & Müller , Moustache , Orbea , and BMC .

A real e-MTB has a mid-drive motor. These offer better weight balance, more direct power delivery, and a stable ride on technical terrain.
Popular motor systems:
- Bosch Performance Line CX: powerful, reliable, highly customizable
- Shimano EP8: lightweight, quiet, and super smooth
- Brose Drive S Mag: whisper quiet with a natural feel
Legally, pedal assist cuts out at 25 km/h in Belgium. That keeps your e-bike road legal.
Note: A speed pedelec goes up to 45 km/h and requires a license plate, insurance, helmet, etc. It's not part of the sporty e-MTB category and isn’t suited for off-road riding.
How far can you ride on an e-MTB?
Battery capacity ranges from 500 Wh to 800 Wh, with an average range between 50 and 150 km.
But that depends on:
- The terrain (flat vs. hilly)
- Your weight (and the bike’s)
- Your power mode (Eco, Trail, Boost)
- Wind and surface conditions
Rule of thumb: the tougher the trail, the shorter the range.
Lightweight systems vs. high-power bikes: which one’s for you?
When it comes to electric sport bikes, you’ve got two main options: lightweight systems and high-power e-bikes. Each comes with its own benefits, depending on how sporty or technical you like your rides.
Light e-bikes
Systems like Fazua Ride or TQ-HPR50 are designed to keep things light and subtle. These bikes weigh in around 12–15 kg, have compact motors and smaller batteries (250–350 Wh). Perfect if you’re an active rider who wants to do most of the work yourself but appreciates a little help on climbs or tough days.
Pros:
- Lightweight, feels like a regular mountain bike
- Great for athletes who want assist as a safety net
- Sleek design with a quiet, integrated motor
Heavier e-bikes
Bikes with Bosch CX or Shimano EP8 motors are heavier (up to 22–25 kg), but pack way more punch. Ideal for serious off-road use, big climbs, or riders who want max support. They come with bigger batteries (500–800 Wh) and stronger assist modes.
Pros:
- Powerful support, even on the steepest, most technical terrain
- Longer range at higher assist levels
- Perfect for long, demanding rides
So which should you pick?
Choose a light e-bike if you want a natural ride feel, like to pedal actively, enjoy climbing, or are a lightweight rider yourself.
Go for a high-power e-bike if you want maximum comfort, more torque, and serious support, ideal for e-MTBing or gravel rides with major elevation.

FAQ
Isn’t an e-MTB cheating?
Absolutely not. You’re still pedaling! The motor just supports you when you need it. Think of it like a climbing buddy giving you a helpful push, but it’s still your legs, your ride, and your skills that get you to the top.
Can you ride an e-MTB on regular MTB trails?
Yes, in Belgium you can ride an e-MTB on most marked MTB trails, as long as your bike meets legal standards (max 25 km/h assist, no throttle). Respect the same trail rules as regular mountain bikers and you’re good to go.
Some exceptions may apply, in nature reserves or specific routes, e-MTBs may be restricted. These are usually clearly signposted or listed on websites like Natuur en Bos.
Note: In other countries (like France, Switzerland, or Italy), access rules may vary — especially in national parks. Always check local regulations before heading out to avoid fines or awkward encounters.
Are e-MTBs high-maintenance?
Like any mountain bike, an e-MTB needs regular upkeep, think suspension, chain, cassette, brakes, and tires. Off-road use means faster wear, so stay on top of your maintenance.
The motor, battery, and display are relatively low-maintenance, but:
- Never use a pressure washer near the motor or display, water can damage the electronics.
- Store your bike in a dry place and avoid extreme temperatures, especially for the battery.
- Got an error on your display or motor? Don’t tinker with wires or software. Always go to a certified e-MTB specialist with the right tools and expertise.
