Let's gravel for coffee & cake: the 5 best Belgian gravel routes

Have you caught the gravel bug too? No surprise there – the mix of dirt roads, gravel lanes and wooded trails takes you far from busy traffic and deep into nature. Peace, challenge, and freedom on two wheels.

And what’s gravel without coffee? The best rides end (or begin) with a blissful espresso, a cappuccino on a sun-drenched terrace, or a coffee stop in a bar where a bit of mud on your frame is no problem. Fortunately, Belgium – small in size but big on routes – is bursting with gravel options and trendy, bike-friendly coffee bars.

From the quiet Kempen to the punchy Ardennes: in this blog, you’ll discover five top gravel routes, complete with GPX or signposting and a coffee bar where your bike is just as welcome as you are.

    1. Gravel & Slopes - Flemish Ardennes (±80 km)

    Start & finish : Oudenaarde
    GPX available via RouteYou

The Flemish Ardennes are a paradise for those who enjoy a mix of unpaved tracks and rolling hills . This route winds between legendary cobbled climbs but mainly favours the peace and quiet of gravel roads and wooded lanes around Maarkedal, Ronse, and Kluisbergen.

Coffee stop : Peloton Café (Oudenaarde)

The go-to spot for cycling fans, right next to the Tour of Flanders Centre . Order a strong Coureur Espresso or choose from a range of “mattentaart”, rice cake, muffins, or the cake of the day. Cyclists are more than welcome here, and the terrace is perfect for post-ride chat in the sun. Take a photo and tag #coffeerideCRVV – you might just earn a spot on their feed.
