Cycling along nodes: how does it work?

Cycling through Flanders – and, by extension, our neighbouring countries – can be so much more than your daily commute. Thanks to the convenient cycling node network, you can plan your own trip through a series of clearly marked points. Whether you prefer a leisurely ride through nature or a more energetic route across the region, cycling nodes help you find your way with ease.

In this article, you’ll discover everything you need to know about cycling nodes: how the system works, where to find routes, and why the NodeMapp app could be your perfect cycling companion.

    What are cycling nodes?

Cycling nodes are a simple yet ingenious navigation system that gives cyclists the freedom to plan their own routes. They’re based on a network of numbered points (or “nodes”) spread across Belgium and neighbouring countries. Each node is marked with a sign showing its number, and the paths between them are clearly signposted.

Forget about wrestling with complicated maps – just choose your starting node, note down the numbers of the nodes you want to follow, and ride from one to the next. It’s simple, quick, and above all, flexible.

How does the cycling node network work?

Flanders’ cycling node network covers more than 6,000 km of paths that pass key sights, natural areas, and picturesque villages. The nodes are logically connected, making it easy to ride from one location to another.

Each has its own unique number and links to other nodes via clearly signposted routes. The signage is straightforward: you’ll see the number of your current node plus the numbers of the next nodes you can head to. No fuss, no stress – just follow the numbers.
