5 challenging mountain bike routes in Belgium: from Ravels to Houffalize
Time to hit the trails. While many people in Flanders associate mountain biking with mud-plugging in the winter, MTB is very much a summer sport. Those muddy winter scenes are more the domain of cyclocross. Dry trails, longer days, and pleasant temperatures make spring and summer the perfect seasons to sharpen your skills or explore new routes.
That’s why we’ve put together 5 tried-and-tested MTB routes – 4 in Flanders and 1 absolute gem in the Ardennes. All are clearly signposted, well-maintained, and suitable for a range of ability levels.
1. MTB route Ravels (ATB Club Ravels - Antwerp)
Ravels’ established MTB route is a classic for riders who love sandy terrain, singletracks, and plenty of variety. The route is signposted with Sport Vlaanderen arrows and consists of several loops, together totalling about 50 km.
The local loop starting at the ATB Kempen canteen is just 6 kilometres, but make no mistake – it packs in drops, other technical features, and no fewer than 140 turns. Explore first, then turn on the gas – that’s the message.
Highlights:
- Technical cornering on the local ATB track in Ravels
- Wide sandy stretches through the Turnhout Fens area
- Quiet, traffic-free surroundings
Level : rookie to intermediate
Starting point: Canteen ABT-Kempen, Raaftuinweg 8, 2380 Ravels
Tip: During the MTB season, you can join the famous Thursday evening practice rides here. Just under an hour of full throttle on the mountain bike – perfect for getting the engine running.

2. MTB route Kluisbergen (East Flanders)
The Tour of Flabders is all well and good, but if you’re after something a little more challenging, head straight for the Kluisbos. The Flemish Ardennes are known for their tough descents – but you’ll need to tackle some steep climbs first to earn them.
Too much power for one ride? Mix things up by linking with the blue loop in Zwalm or the red loop in Ronse for even more variety.
Highlights:
- Steep climbs and thrilling descents
- Wooded surroundings with stunning viewpoints
- Connections to other routes in the region (Ronse, Oudenaarde)
Level: rookie to advanced
Starting point: Kluisbergen sports hall
Tip : forgot something? No problem, our shop is nearby, always welcome!

3. MTB route Meerdaalwoud (Flemish Brabant)
This vast forest south of Leuven offers plenty of challenge – with around 500 metres of elevation over just 31 kilometres. Pacing yourself is key. Here, forest singletracks alternate with gravel roads, giving you the chance to catch your breath now and then.
Highlights:
- Wide forest roads and fast singletracks
- Plenty of shaded sections
- Perfectly signposted
Level: medium
Starting point: Play Forest Everzwijnbad, Bierbeek
Tip : Combine the blue and green loops through the Meerdaal and Heverlee forests, and take a break at the ponds of Zoet Water or the Minnebron spring.
